You can help youth overcome their worries about the school day by donating these packets full of educational supplies to help make sure they are Ready to Learn as soon as they are enrolled.
Each Pack should contain at least 5 of the following items packed in a plastic or paper bag to qualify.
- Packet of pencils
- Packet of pens
- Notebook
- 3-ring binder
- Ruler
- Compass
- Protractor
- Glue stick
- Pencil pouch
- Eraser
NOTE: You must be present with a valid photo I.D. (and a signed Parent Consent Form if you are under 18) when dropping off kits. Be sure to bring a copy of the Service Reporting Form (downloadable from My Account page of the FREE.I.P. Volunteer System) to have signed by the on-site Volunteer Coordinator.
About NAEHCY and Homeless Education
Each year, over one million youth experience homelessness in our nation’s towns, cities and counties. On a regular basis, homeless children and youth report that school is a home to them – a place where they see the same faces, sit in the same seat, and can put their hearts and minds into pursuits that ease their daily troubles. In academic settings, students gain the skills and support needed to avoid poverty and homelessness as adults.
Homeless youth have a federal right to go to school. Every school district in the nation has a designated “liaison” who is charged with helping to identify and support students experiencing homelessness. NAEHCY supports these local school district liaisons through training, technical assistance and other resources that reinforce our mission to ensure that every child is successful – academically, personally, and socially. Your support through the Free.I.P. program will help school districts meet the needs of youth who are living in homeless situations by providing crucial supplies that will help them be ready to learn as soon as they arrive at school.
Local homeless education programs are designed to remove barriers to the enrollment and success of homeless students. Liaisons and their partners provide transportation, supplies, services, and assistance so that homeless children, youth, and families are able to access community and school-based resources, such as health care, nutrition support, clothing, and much more.
Wayne County Public Schools, outside the city of Detroit, served 868 homeless children and youth in the 2009-2010 academic year.
Thanks for making a difference!
