About the RE*Generation

The RE*Generation

Over two million youth (between the ages of 12 and 24) will experience at least one episode of homelessness each year and over 100,000 youth sleep on the street for 6 months or more in America.  Youth homelessness is the result of other societal problems like poverty, drug abuse and addiction, homophobia, mental illness and domestic violence. Young people who’ve grown up homeless often spend much of their adult lives homeless.

The RE*Generation is Virgin Mobile’s effort to empower a generation to help its own.  We’re bringing together organizations that care about homeless youth, and connecting them with young people who want to help. We’ve been a dedicated force in creating awareness and support for homeless youth since the creation The RE*Generation in 2006.

Here are a few notable RE*Generation milestones:

  • In 2006, we launched a Txt2Clothe program, via a partnership with American Eagle Oufitters provided clothing via a simple donation triggered by text messages from the public. Over the length of the program more than 200,000 pieces of clothing were donated to homeless youth across the country.
  • In the 2007, Virgin Mobile and The RE*Generation Task Force played a key role in successfully lobbying Congress for the designation of November as National Homeless Youth Awareness Month.
  • In 2009, we created the FREE.I.P. program offering music fans a chance to attend sold out music performances exchange for their volunteer time. In 2009, over 30,000 hours of volunteer time were donated and nearly 10,000 in-kind donations for our RE*Generation partners.
  • In April 2010, Virgin Mobile and our partner Virgin Unite, the charitable arm of the Virgin Group, received the 2010 Private Sector Award from the National Alliance To End Homelessness in recognition of our efforts to raise awareness of youth homelessness and foster engagement by young people across the country.

More about FREE.I.P.

Our innovative FREE.I.P. program partners with local homeless youth organizations across the country and provides support for projects that require volunteer support. Beyond the good karma, this program generates for participating volunteers, it also gives them an opportunity to receive various rewards, including tickets to some of the year’s most anticipated music and sporting events.
